If your child is a victim of crime

Believe your child
It is important that you communicate to your child that you believe what he or she is telling you.

Protect your child
Make sure that your child is safe. Do what you can to help him or her feel safe.

Contact authorities
Call the appropriate authorities, such as law enforcement or social services to obtain assistance or to report the crime.

Obtain services
Obtain medical help, if needed, and counseling for your child.

Talk with your child
Ask your child what he or she needs and make sure your child understands that he or she is not to blame for what happened.
